Born on May 30, 1970, in Normal, Illinois, and raised in Frankenmuth, Michigan, John carried with him a lifelong passion for learning, history, psychology, music, and most importantly, people. After earning his Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from National Louis University, John found his true calling in the classrooms and halls of Kelly High School, later Kelly College Prep, where he dedicated more than 25 years to inspiring and uplifting students.
Mr. Zehnder had a rare gift for making every lesson meaningful and every student feel seen. Whether teaching AP Psychology, World History, U.S. History, or Civics, he brought knowledge, humor, and genuine compassion into his classroom each day. Beyond academics, he devoted countless hours to Academic Decathlon, school events, summer programs, and mentoring fellow educators. He was not only a teacher to his students but a trusted advisor, friend, and source of wisdom to his colleagues.
John’s quick wit, incredible intelligence, love of trivia, unwavering commitment to fairness, and unmistakable sense of humor made him someone people naturally gravitated toward. He had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcomed, comfortable, and heard.
Even during his courageous battle with cancer, John faced every challenge with determination, optimism, and grace. He passed away on June 1, 2026, surrounded by his loving wife Audrey, family, and close friends.
While we mourn the loss of an extraordinary teacher and human being, we celebrate a life filled with kindness, compassion, loyalty, laughter, and service to others. John leaves behind a legacy that lives on in the thousands of students he taught, the colleagues he mentored, and the countless lives he touched.
Thank you, Mr. Zehnder, for your dedication, your wisdom, your humor, and the love you shared so freely. Your lessons will remain in our hearts forever.
Rest in peace, John. You will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
